Wellness Check
When evaluating your life, you not only want to identify patterns of dysfunction, you also want to evaluate the health and wellness of your life. After all, doing the work of counseling is to help you have a more adaptive and fulfilling life, right?
If one end of the spectrum is dysfunction and the other end of the spectrum is wellness, let’s identify where you are on that spectrum and in different areas of life. Some of these different areas can be: physical, financial, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual which are identified in the Wheel of Life Balance assessment.
We all desire to move away from discomfort and move towards what feels good. It’s how we’re wired. Feeling good - feels good. And yet, suffering in life is inevitable and can be very difficult when you’re in the middle of it. There are, however, ways to eliminate some of the suffering that you experience. Some examples of ways to increase support and decrease suffering in various areas are; creating a budget, seeing a counselor, creating an exercise routine, engaging in spiritual practices and more. Yes, there may be a sense of difficulty in doing these activities, but by actively working on areas of growth you can create positive change longterm that will ultimately help you to feel better. Although not all of life’s suffering will go away, when you take care of yourself well, you will likely be more resilient when the storms of life come, and you’ll have resources to pull on to strengthen you and find some sense of balance and support.
By identifying areas that you ARE currently well and strong in, you can celebrate the blessings and all the hard work you put in to get there. See the good. Celebrate it. Recognize your accomplishments and achievements. When you own your strengths, it helps boost your confidence and increases motivation to work on some other specific areas that may need some support.
You can assess your wellness, by looking at life in a multi-faceted way. In the Wheel of Life Balance assessment, you can evaluate wellness in the areas of: physical, financial, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual. These different areas of life all are separate and yet they all impact and interact with each other. You may have experienced trauma that has created a major set back for you in one or a few of these areas. Life is hard and will never be perfect. Yet, there are ways that you can improve your overall life satisfaction. Seeing areas that need growth and support, giving yourself tender loving care (and also some hard and dedicated work), can help to bring more contentment, peace and wellness to your life.
